Dating back to 776 BC, the Ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece. The victors of these early games were crowned with wreaths from a sacred olive tree that grew behind the temple of Zeus. On the other hand, the modern Olympic Games are named for the athletic contests held in ancient Greece for almost 12 centuries. Each country and athlete swells with pride upon receipt of the coveted gold medallion.
